The First Long Day Irvine was the place and as they say, you cant win them all. The Walnut girls know who they want, they are the fine girls of Arcadia. Looking forward to a game in the championship with the only team that had beat them, the Midnight Express were to take care their own business first. The first game of the tournament was nothing but a scheduled match, a steppingstone that has to be stepped on to get to the next. Pacific Palisades gave a bit of resistance during the first and second quarters, but the untiring defense of Andrea and Christine Wong set up the offense of Janessa and her line-mates Lauren and Katie. The adjustments to a wider and faster field was made and a devastating onslaught of goals was provided, ending the game to a 4-0 victory. The afternoon game was filled with great expectations. The team that requested and looking forward to play the locals were on hand. The first contest was held by the parents of both teams (Walnut vs. Granada Hills Oldies). With the use of a coin, they tried to settle which team has to face the afternoon sun. Spearheaded by Larry H., the coin was tossed and the Midnight Express oldies suffered their first defeat-they have to face the scorching sun. The Granada Hills Oldies had the first laugh that didnt last long. Janessa scored the first goal of the match in the first minute of the game. This had taken off a burden of proving who is the best. The goal of the opponents was under attack. The most notable play was a break away by Valerie at the middle and managing to come close to challenge the Granada Hills goalie. The kick was good with all the sound of a solid footing and blow on the ball. The ball flew a bit to the right of the mouth of the goal. The attempt was all indicative of a serious play by Valerie. The goalie flew to her right, parallel to the ground and tapped the ball with her over reaching arms. The Midnight Express gals were denied of their second goal. The third quarter of the game featured a disappointing plays by the opponents. Every offensive moves were cut short by the defense of Elisa and Christie. A potent defense against a struggling offense by the Granada Hills Girls followed. The face-off was settled with the Midnight Express foiling the clean record of Granada Hills. When they say, "Its pay back time", La Mirada is the team to watch. The hunger to put an end to the domination of Walnut is apparent. Their moves-very intense, their defense-unyielding, their kicks-flying and their confidence is building. Knowing that Walnut is behind by a point in the scoring system before the game, and couldnt settle for a tie, the opponents strived hard to match the first goal of the locals. Their efforts went in futility during the first half but was answered when the tying goal was dropped in during the third. With the Midnight Express behind a point in the pool standing, they have to face the fact of playing for third for the first time courtesy of La Mirada. The quest for the 8th gold was history and the hope of playing the Arcadians became a wish. They played for third against the Cerritos gals (nemesis of the 1998 Aftershocks) and won 1-0. |
